Using pucks has CYA than can build up over time to the point where it takes a lot of chlorine to be effective as a sanitizer and the pool isn't safe to swim in. But if you winterize your pool which includes draining a bunch of water that usually isn't an issue.

I like the SWG because once dialed in it just works and doesn't add any other chemicals but it will cause the ph to rise which means you now have to add muratic acid every couple weeks. Also there is an initial salt investment, like hundreds of pounds but gives the water a nice saline quality.

I bought my generator direct from China for $650 with shipping and it is sized for a 60k gallon pool, mine is 25k so I don't have to run it full time saving the cell life. I am a DIY guy but I imagine them expensive to install.

The cheapest and cleanest way to sanitize a pool is the cheap bleach from walmart or liquid shock. This can be automated with a Peristaltic Pump like a Stenner. Now knowing Walmart delivers bottles of bleach for free this might be the option I'd consider if doing it today.
