I don't think sothe ump is supposed to give the delayed dead ball signal
As soon as he/she sees the illegal pitch. It's the same hand signal on an obstruction call. So technically they should make the call no matter what the end result is everytime he/she sees it. I understand saying what good does it do to call it on a ball because the end result is the same, but he should have been calling it every time he saw it. As the announcers pointed out, he didn't. And yesterday the ump wasn't giving the signal until after the ball crossed the plate. I think this article is saying that there isn't a way to accurately account in a scorebook for how many total were called because if it was a ball anyway then it goes down in the book as a ball not illegal pitch.
