As told by my friend Don Smith from Saltville:
Ted Williams was one of the greats. Always dreaded seeing him come to bat against my Yankees.
On this day in '56 at Bowen Field with a standing room crowd only, fans were allowed to sit on the ground just outside the foul lines in the outfield.
Williams was in right field hitting fungo flies to outfielders on this chilly day in Bluefield. A fungo bat is a lighter bat used in drills. It is not used in games.
We, of course, were yelling at him and asking questions and he was responding with interesting comments.
