I learned a new word today. Avoirdupois.


Defined as a system of weights based on a pound of 16 ounces or 7,000 grains, widely used in English-speaking countries.

In context, "a short ton is 2,000 pounds avoirdupois."

Hard to believe I made it all the way through my materials labs at VT without hearing that. Now, how to work that into casual conversation...
