I got a nice lady who sounded stressed, but she had the same name as


my maternal grandmother. I chose not to tell her that for fear she'd burst into tears and accidentally hang up on me. I only waited on hold 15 minutes or so, but that was no time to start over.

After SSA answered my call, there were numerous over-the-phone options I opted out of, then this, before I got Clara.":

"In a few words, tell us why you've called."
"I'm closing my business."
"Let me see if I understand. You're calling about benefits, getting a replacement SS card, calling about office hours, or if it's something else, say, 'It's something else.'"
"It's something else."
"Please hold while I find someone to help you."
