Oscar host "issue" is a decentish example

of the splintering of our mass culture; in the past you could have Bob Hope, Johnny Carson or Letterman host, broad appeal, not niche performers (maybe Letterman to an extent). Is there someone out there with that kind of pull? I dunno.

You can see it in the movies that used to get nominated for best picture and what gets nominated now. 1970s best picture nominees were really big mass market flicks with a ton of appeal that happened to be classics in a lot of cases. Today...
