I love trivia. They have a good time on the show. One guy called in today
and chose to answer the question about how the distance in a marathon came about. He had run in the Fairbanks Alaska one that is called Equinox. It is rated a 2, right behind the one at Pikes Peak. This guy sounded like he was 80.
My brother runs a lot of marathons. His goal is to run one in each state. He has 14 to go and the Alaska one is his last on the list.
But, the history of the marathon and its distance goes back to the ancient conflicts between Greece and Sparta. When Greece won, they sent a messenger to Marathon Greece to tell them of their victory. It was 26 miles. The .2 was added later. It came because, in England, Queen Elizabeth's (I believe) viewing stand was .2 miles after the finish line. So the distance of a marathon changed.
I have to research this.
Have a great weekend.
