Granting a year of free eligibility was a tragically bad decision

There are lots of 2022 kids in lots of sports who aren't getting scholarship opportunities because money is tied up with 6th and 7th year kids completing masters degrees. Believe you me, my son experienced this first hand. There are significant numbers of kids who won't have undergrad opportunities while older kids are getting advanced degrees.

Was told by numerous FCS football coaches that they have reduced scholly numbers to offer, especially since they didn't even know who was staying.

In hindsight, the NCAA should have allowed a free redshirt year ... but if you chose to participate, then you used a year of eligibilty. Additionally, if kids still had a red shirt year available, then that should have been use (much like a medical shirt isn't given if a red shirt is still available)
