Is Michigan even that bad of a choice? They have a very tough SOS

The one I think is absurd is Rutgers. They have a terrible non-conference schedule and managed to lose to three awful non-conference teams with a losing record. They were all over the map in conference - they beat some good teams, but they lost to some bad teams.

Or compare Indiana vs TAMU. They both had the same number of quadrant 1 wins. TAMU only had two losses outside of quadrant 1, whereas Indiana had five. With nearly identical strengths of schedule, TAMU finished with a better record.

Or compare Indiana vs Xavier. Xavier has an extra quadrant one win (although they have an extra quadrant 3 loss) and Xavier has a much tougher strength of schedule (#11 vs #63).
