I think they want to push north with their southern forces


and split the country to stop the flow of weapons into Kiev and Kharviv. Their southern forces are much better than the northern guys (who are a hodge podge of units that aren't working too well) so they hope that they can drive north (from the south) to split Ukraine and disrupt the flow of supplies coming in from Poland, Slovenia and Romania.
