graded on a curve.

The world has gotten pretty good at finding out what is going on elsewhere in ways that just weren't possible 20 or more years ago. Evil dictators in the past had complete control over information, which helped them continue unchecked.

Now, humanity may be good at ignoring bad and uncomfortable news if they decide it doesn't apply to them (the plight of the Uyghurs in China comes to mind). But we can't claim ignorance about atrocities anymore.

Most of the historically really bad stuff wasn't uncovered until after the fact. Today, we generally know what's going on in real-time. For a dictator to pull this stuff today takes some stones.
