When I was a kid in Horseheads, NY, I used to watch


the Yankees on WPIX. Mantle was my favorite athlete back then. At the time, he played 1B, but my dad told me that MM had played centerfield for most of his career.

Mantle was named after Mickey Cochrane, the great catcher for the Philadelphia A's and Detroit Tigers. However, Cochrane's real first name was Gordon, but Mutt Mantle apparently didn't know this. Mickey M. considered himself fortunate not to be named Gordon.
