Has Russia really ever been a strong attacking force in history?


Obviously they are extremely fierce when defending home soil (see Napoleon, Stalingrad) but offensively they don’t seem to have the same heart.
Defeated by Japanese in early 20th century. Struggled mightily vs Finland in the Winter War. Imploded during WWI. Lost in Afghanistan. I guess they get some credit for driving to Berlin but by then Nazi Germany was toast and trying to fight on three fronts and really had been beaten to hell in Stalingrad.

I don’t know much about Peter the Great era so I presume he was succesfull expanding the empire but that’s going back to 1700.
