The root of the backlash is they invented new characters and changed the

backstory of long established characters in order to "modernize" (good neutral word, lets go with that) the show.

Example: turning Galadriel into Xena the Warrior Princess because they need a "strong woman" as the lead. And strong = hacking things to death with a sword.
