Outside of a few scenarios most teams would just take the free throws...
...there are exceptions but the reason to stop it is to quit slowing the game down and having the end turn into a free throw shooting contest. I'd argue letting the defense trap a sideline inbound and then foul if they can't get it slows the game far worse than free throws do.

Free throw shooting right now is the best it has ever been in the history of college basketball, in most situations teams would play the odds and take the free throws. At least in the double bonus. A rule change that has actually been proposed and voted on is doing like the women's game (made easier by quarters) and eliminating the one and one and going straight to two free throws after a set point. I don't mind the rule the way it is personally but there are a number of models to change foul structure that I think are interesting and don't hurt the game and could possibly speed it up, or make it harder to get a star player in foul trouble.
