If I remember correctly, once they had competing shows Letterman had better ratings at first. Then Leno had some guy on for his pound of flesh apology tour moment that got a lot of interest, the ratings turned and Leno out performed him from then on.
Seems to point to the idea that Letterman's schtick played better later and the 11:30 audience gave him a try, but then turned back to Leno. Either way, they both made an f'n fortune and I believe Letterman had ownership in his gig so probably made out better.
