I read his lips at the beginning "Not the intent"

I believe he was referencing Robie calling for the illegal move with the back trip. In NCAA you can't attempt to trip a wrestler from behind without at least one foot on the mat. I don't know the exact language of the rule, but that is the jest.

This rule was put in place to help project wrestlers legs/knees from getting injured in one particular trip. What the Pitt guys were doing isn't what caused it to be illegal, and doesn't generally get anyone hurt (anything can happen in wrestling). Gavin seemed to be upset because the intent of the rule wasn't to prevent that particular trip, however by the letter of the rule it is illegal.

He was probably upset that Robie was calling it out, when it does seem to be something he is teaching, especially given that he worked with Robie to get the dual moved back. Just my 2 cents.
