NFL rule is, if the player makes a clear effort to give himself up, then the play is over, Regardless of whether he was touched. He clearly gave himself up by Not running towards the goal line after falling down, and then literally through the ball down at the ground, that is clearly demonstrating to the officials that he has given himself up; thus the play is over on the spot.
