You bring up an interesting point

Some friends have invited us on a beach trip to Mexico. It's about a 45 minute drive south of Cancun. Would take a shuttle from the airport. I consider the hotel zone in Cancun safe. Have been there three times with no issues. But I'm not too sure about that 45 minute drive south. A lot of not so good things could happen along that stretch of road. I'm not an overly cautious or paranoid person. But I'm not too sure about that.
