Team is doing great - but realistic thoughts on rest of year
We are 7-2 with 2 good wins over Duke (apparently they were overrated and will likely drop out of the top 25 with the last loss to UNC at home by 16 making them 4-4 in the ACC). We have yet to beat an "elite" team, although were pretty close against Tenn and NCST. Have a couple bad loses (@UNC and @Liberty)
Of the remaining 9 ACC games, we will likely be dogs in 5 (@ #20 ND, #14 Ga Tech, UNC, @ #5 Louisville, and #3 NCST), and favored in 4 (BC, Clem, @ Syr., Miami). Of course we could win more than 4 (or lose more than 5), but doing just that lands us at 11-7, which is great and solidly gets us in the NCAA tourney. More than that would really be a special year, and is certainly possible.
Louisville and NCST are clearly the best in the ACC so far. Our best chances to win against the top teams left on the schedule are @ND, and then GA Tech at home, although they look to be really good too. We are very capable of winning one of the other 3, but that will be tough.
IMO we don't have the front court depth/muscle against most elite teams (held our own recently against NCST in the comeback though). I went to the TENN game, and we were ahead into the 4th quarter and playing really well. At crunch time though, TENN just had to many good, tough front court players for us (basically we have Kitley as far as size).
This sets up to be a great regular season if we can keep it up, and could be really special if we can pull off an upset or two.
