Expectations - reality - solution

For some time now I have said we were lacking one or two "go to players". When you need a score or a big rebound who can you expect to deliver? Honestly we just don't have that guy. Aluma is our top guy but he needs help getting the ball in scoring position and most schools have a taller player who can make things difficult for Keve to score.

The answer? Exactly why MY was so optomistic in preseason. He said we had five players who all could score on any given moment. Early on that seemed to be the case. Later on we have seen some inconsistencies in the shooting by multiple players.

So the solution for this team is the sum of the whole. But recocgnize that every player can't contribute the same way and at the same level of success. So instead of pointing out one specific player's struggles we need to hold each player accountable to their specific expectation level.

I remember earlier on GCHokie pointed out that we needed more from Aluma. Well if you read the box score game to game you see KA is putting up big numbers. But could he be doing more? He noted Storm was doing exactly what MY is asking him to give. Don't compare these to his Woffard days when he was needed to be a volume scorer. He is supposed to set up his teammates without too many turnovers. He is doing just that.

Coach MY in his taped pregame interview for the radio broadcast said he felt we could attack the bigs one on one. He noted the UNC guys weren't too quick with their feet and we could have some success there. Well our perimeter did a nice job feeding the post. But too often we were either too close to the rim forcing difficult angles to shoot or threw up left handed hook shots and more. Just not high percentage shots no matter how close you were to the basket.

Late in the game twice Petulla dribbled into the right corner and Bacot switched off and followed him to defend. So that means whoever he had been guarding was now being covered by the shorter guard who had been chasing Petulla. So coaching 101 says the VT big should roll to the basket looking for the ball to score over a shorter defender. But no our Big stayed out at the perimeter so no advantage was gained. Just multiple mental lapses.

My point from this too long post is that we need every player to play up to their potential and then the sum of the whole will give us a chance in every game we play. See ND game. Thats our only chance.
