It all builds (HOWEVER)

First, alot of the recruiting strategy and recruiting and building foundational sound relationships goes back to Frank. He started this when he came in 1987, and it was tough to build them. When Coach Pry was a GA at VT, he learned and observed it with Foster, Beamer, Stiney and the rest at the prime. Then he gets to meet coach Franklin (another big relationship guy) on recruiting and it builds at Penn State (where Paterno worked the relationship aspect for eons at Penn State).

WIth Tapp, his background is the same, from Frank.. its about relationships. He got is dream job for the NFL and thats great, but he probably would have been on the current staff.

Programs have to be true to themselves and true to the potential student athletes and the folks that mentor them. There is alot of stuff out there, but if you have solid real culture for a program (this is all college sports), build and sustain a trusting reliable network with the high schools, you will get the guys that fit your program.

The big difference now is the pace, and demands for the programs. you have to have the support staff, you have to have the development team, you have to have the analytics, and turn on a dime. and you have to coach and produce a winning product on the field.
