At that time, it was very concerning to UMD administration that a significant proportion of in-state high school seniors wanted a true college experience and saw several schools in Virginia as much better options. One school that was mentioned often as a major competitor for Maryland's students was James Madison University. From a personal standpoint, despite the fact that offspring of faculty members could go to UMD tuition-free, I had three sons graduate from Virginia Tech and a daughter from the College of William and Mary.
