If VT doesn't qualify for the NIT this year, which is still a possibility,

then should VT pay the $50K entry fee to participate in the CBI? Normally I wouldn't consider spending that kind of money. However, for the 2009 CBI Oregon State (13-17) was one of the participating teams and ended up winning the tournament. Oregon State finished with a record of 18-18 (lost 1 game in the 3 game championship series). Then for the 2011 CBI, Oregon (16-17) participated in the tournament and won it to finish with a record of 21-18 (lost 1 game in the 3 game championship series).

I guess my point is that the CBI has a history of allowing teams with a losing record to participate in the tournament. Some years multiple teams with a losing record. Multiple times a team with losing record entering the tournament has gone on to win it. FWIW Siena in 2014 and North Texas in 2018 are the other examples. While Pepperdine won the 2021 CBI with a .500% record. Regardless of VT's record at the end of the season, should VT consider playing in it? It is worth noting that UVA (2008), Wofford (2012), Pitt (2012), Purdue (2013), Texas (2013), Penn State (2014), WVU (2019), and a couple Pac-12 schools have all participated in the tournament.
