"Listening" is a code word


What I have discovered is they don't want you to listen to understand. They want you to hear and to keep your mouth shut. You can say the following phrases with appropriate head nods:
- How did that make you feel?
- I'm so sorry that happened!
- Well she / he is just a @$#%@#$!

Never try to relate. Never try to provide perspective IN THE MOMENT. You have to wait 5 years and then you can slide in a situation you are currently facing along with how you would or could handle it. Make no tie to her original problem.

There's a 5% chance that you'll make an impact, but it's better than nothing.

If the whole thing is about your mother or sister... start drinking and chewing a Sugar Daddy or other impossible caramel.
