Yes, back in the day. The continued effort to continue to make bread, feed


the starter and keep it going is a pretty big undertaking.

Typically you can find someone to give you a cup of starter to help launch your effort. Pro tip: avoid buying the big jars of yeast (though cheaper) and instead use the small individual packets to insure you have a live yeast.
