IMO your parallel is right, reasoning is the effect not the cause
nascar went from regional to national and back to regional and CFB is doing the same. in both cases they built off a hungry national tv partner (ESPN), then the money got so big and they went crazy. The money focused on the big draws and began ignoring everyone else. In nascar it was Gordon, Johnson and a couple others but basically 2 teams had the money to compete (Hendricks and JGR). CFB has focused on the SEC and Big. Thus the casual fan is bored with the same teams always winning and fans of others have tuned out. Thus back to their roots.
Being a regional sport is the effect of fans nationally losing interest because of a lack of competition.
