That's the only reason. They know it isn't going to provide compelling matchups. It's going to produce far more epic blowouts. That's the reason I am not for it. If they do pass it, they should restrict conferences to no more than 2 schools. ESPN wants their wholly owned subsidiary (the SEC) to get as many teams into the playoff as possible. More SEC teams means more money for ESPN and the SEC.
ND wants it because it practically guarantees them a spot in the playoff every year without having to battle for a conference championship.
