Question on "Olympic Sport Specific Giving".
I am kind of tired of football with the NIL issues and all the portal stuff. So, my plan is to start making donations to wrestling and Track & Field. My question is this. Does the money really get to the specific sport? I'm confident that donations really do get to the football program. Not certain about donations to Olympic sports. I was thinking about this. Money at all facets of universities is traditionally fungible. For example, let's say that a department has a budget of $100K and I give $10K to the department. The "administration" then says because they received a donation of $10K, we now only have to give that department $90K to fulfil their budget. The $10K that the administration did not have to give to the department, they now give that $10K to THEIR priority. If that happens, then the $10K donation does not make the department any better. They still end up with $100K for their budget. I know this may sound cynical on my part, but I just wanted some thoughts on the subject. Does a donation to an Olympic sport really get to the sport and hopefully make it better? I plan to donate now no matter what anyone says, but it could affect future donations. I would be interested in some feedback. TIA!
