Dereon Seabron projected as first-rounder in NBA mock drafts
Dereon Seabron projected as first-rounder in NBA mock drafts by R. Cory Smith
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Fifteen games into his redshirt sophomore season with NC State, Dereon Seabron has been more than just turning heads around the league. The leading rebounder and No. 3 scorer in the ACC has been gaining national attention, including some love from NBA scouts and analysts across the country.
In the latest NBA mock drafts released by both Bleacher Report and NBADraft.net, Seabron has been tabbed as a first-round pick.
Jonathan Wasserman of Bleacher Report listed Seabron at No. 28 overall in his latest mock draft to the Memphis Grizzlies. So just how quickly has Seabron ascended up Wasserman's rankings over the last couple games? The 6-foot-7, 180-pound wing wasn't even listed on Wasserman's Top 50 board one week ago on Dec. 29.
Prior to getting noticed by Bleacher Report, the Norfolk native was already on the radar for the guys over at NBADraft.net. Listed at No. 24 on the latest Big Board released in mid-December, Seabron is slotted at No. 23 to the Cleveland Cavaliers in the latest mock draft on Dec. 15.
According to his profile on NBADraft.net, Seabron was given a 91 prospect rating, making him the No. 4 prospect in the ACC behind only Paolo Banchero and Wendell Moore of Duke and Blake Wesley of Notre Dame.
In 15 games this season, Seabron has already amassed nine double-doubles with exactly 100 defensive rebounds and 50 defensive rebounds. But the versatile wing has really shown off his scoring acumen in the first two games of the 2022 portion of the schedule, snapping for a combined 53 points on 20-of-28 (71.4 percent) shooting from the field against Florida State and Virginia Tech.
Technically a redshirt sophomore with NC State, Seabron will be turning 22 on May 26 after spending one year at Massanutten Military Academy before signing with the Wolfpack. If he did opt to exit after this season for the NBA, it would leave a massive void for the Pack next season that would likely need to be filled through the transfer portal.
But it would also mark the first player drafted in the Kevin Keatts era after several went on to play pro basketball in other countries. And given the way Seabron has played this year, he's more than deserving of getting a chance to play in the league for several years after his college career comes to a close.
