I believe the word is he just really couldn't handle the workouts

Perhaps he was difficult as a result, but I would imagine every P5 roster has multiple "personalities". I guess I strongly feel that no one tried to reach him. I don't know what happened, but I got the feeling his HS coach and his mother felt we treated him unfairly.
