I took several HS players of mine to a clinic they held in conjunction with a practice at Cameron. Many years ago, when they had Laettner, Hurley, Hill, etc. National champ team.

He was cussing players, players were cussing each other, players and coaches were cussing team managers, everyone cussing Hurley. I'm a person that occasionally will let a word slip out, but never directed at a player or other person. It's usually about a situation.

On the bus ride home, I had several players talking about the language more than the actual practice. The consensus was they were glad our team language was better than theirs. They all said that I got my messages across to them very effectively without calling them out with cussing. I had four of these guys become high school coaches. When I get to talk with them, they all would say that how they have their team talk to each other without the words, along with running the crap out of them when it slips thru.

As a coach, you hope to be able to teach some life long skills along with basketball. Hopefully I did.
