In general, you test for a bunch of junk mostly if...


… you have a family history of certain types of cancer that are known to have genetic components. These are almost always solid tumor cancers. A short list:

Breast cancer.
Colon cancer.
Prostate cancer.
Ovarian cancer.
Uterine cancer.
Melanoma.
Pancreatic cancer.

Of these, breast and colon cancer are most prominent. For example, if a parent had colon cancer, you should have a more accelerated schedule of screening colonoscopies once you are over age 40.
