Why are white elephant exchanges still a thing??

The whole idea of stealing other people's gifts so you get the best one - I guess it's kinda American, but it sure seems to run against the whole spirit of Christmas thing.

And to those who feel prompted to respond with some variation of "lighten up, Francis" - your Grinch-iness has been duly noted.
