What do their players and former AD's think about them? Do they create great chemistry and teamwork?
Are they smart? Do they gameplan effectively? Can they capitalize on strengths and weaknesses?
Are they a good cultural fit at VT? Will they build the ex-player, alumni, and fan networks?
Do they have CEO skills to manage a large organization with many facets?

I think this stuff is a lot more important than the level at which they coached, or their age, or skin color, or even their record. Look at how different CJF turned out to be from original perceptions of him.
