“Whit knows his career is on the line with this hire

“if he messes this up, the program is screwed but so is his career”

We tend to forget that Fuente was seen as a great hire by almost everyone inside & outside the program when he came on board. It still looked like a smart hire after 2 years. And of course, Mike Young seems to be a brilliant hire. Kenny Brooks is doing very well and there have been some upgrades in Olympic sports. Facility upgrades have accelerated under Whit to become some of the best in the ACC.

So I would disagree that Whits career would be necessarily be screwed if our next coach is not great. Depends on the coach he brings in, factoring in the known VT budget constraints. If the next coach is seen by most as a good fit but things go south after a few years is that Whits fault? Nope. It might hurt his career but he would survive, if not in Blacksburg, at another P5 school. IMO he has done a very good job overall (with the exception of that last presser) and I hope he stays a long time.
