I liked Gus a lot but I'm not sure he'd be right for Tech
IMHO, he is a good man who was hindered at Auburn by his bosses. The booster types were disappointed when they didn't get Jimbo or Jeff Fisher, the AD who hired him left, and the President who lasted a year gave him a huge contract that made anything less than a national championship seem like a failure. Plus he had Saban up the road. So he was always under the gun. There's also the matter of Bo Nix, who was more or less forced upon him by his bosses (leaving people like Malik Willis to leave). As Bryan Harsin is finding out, Nix is a mystery.
That said, some of Gus's problems were of his own making. He never really adjusted when SEC defenses caught up with his offensive scheme. He made some odd in-game decisions. And to be honest he's a quirky guy who never really won over the masses on personality. Once he quit being a mad offensive genius, he had problems. He recruited well but some players never really developed. He didn't develop qbs the way he was supposed to do--his best were more in the Vick mode but he kept trying to go with a pocket passer. All of his ties are in the deep south. [Post edited by WarDarnHokie at 11/17/2021 3:34PM]
