Because it is impossible to recruit anybody (let alone 18 year olds) to come live in Lubbock, TX. Lubbock is much more challenging to recruit than Blacksburg. No one has been able to figure out how to win there since Leach.

Hiring a very popular, very connected ex-HS coach is interesting because it really puts the emphasis on recruiting. My impression is that he'll hire a staff to coach, but he's going to bring in talent to Lubbock. Obviously, it's a different approach, but I think it'll pay off, at least somewhat.
