I would suggest you start with something like Glenmorangie 10.

It's not very harsh with peat and smoke; a good starting point IMO.

I started getting into Scotch about 5 years ago and thought a more expensive bottle would be smoother. So I purchased a bottle of Laphroaig Cask Strength. Big mistake, because it's very peaty, which is a taste you generally need to acquire with time.

It tasted like iodine, so I read up on it more and went with Glenmorangie.

Now, I like them all!
