Actually Indiana was the model and VT modified it
In the times when Lane and Indiana stadium was built, the athletic departments were not looking at stadiums as entertainment venues. For Va Tech looking to replace Miles, the idea was get a larger stadium, with great views and easy to clean and maintain. Indiana's at the time, was designed for that aspect. Wake, being a small school, down the road from VT, wanted a stadium with the same features.
BTW, the reason we did not close in the end zones, was over handicap accessibility laws and engineering standards. Lane was not designed for handicap accessibility, particularly in regards to aisle and entry/exit requirements. The original structure is grandfathered, but if they added on to 'expand' (like close it in), part of the expensive modification would the convert the existing stadium to full compliance. That was not going to do that. Therefore Lane Stadium is basically 4 separate structures.
What VT did that was so stupid was over the west end expansion. orgiinally the west end was going to be designed so they could build an upper deck later. The concrete structure would have been over designed to handle the upper level structures. HOWEVER, the bids came out way over the estimated amount. So, squeeze the project, a bunch of hokie major contributors who are also major presidents of huge construction firms, went over the design, and proposed more limited structure that would only take care of the press box. That renovation would have included much wider areas for concession, (under the west side) which we complain now. That was so short term decision. IT would have been better to delay to cover the difference
