The problem is that he misled everyone (including his employer, and probably his teammates) as to his status. So having lied once already, why should anyone believe any of the longer explanation?

Take the specific political nature of the issue out of the equation for the moment, and you're left with a guy in a critical leadership position making selfish choices and letting his team down. Not a whole lot different from the guy who stays out all night at the club and is too hungover to perform the next day on the field.
