is that Fuente was a good hire at the time. I'm sure whoever Whit hires next will be a good hire at the time. But as Colin Cowherd says frequently, even the good GMs/ADs make mistakes sometimes, in hiring, in drafting, etc. What separates the good ones from the bad ones is that the good ones don't double down on their original mistake. They quickly acknowledge the mistake and move rapidly to correct it. The slow-motion trainwreck of the last 3 VT football seasons could have, and should have, been addressed and corrected long before we arrived at the completely lifeless, dead-in-the-water status we saw last night. Instead, not only did Whit double down, not only did he refuse to see or acknowledge what has been painfully apparent to most casual fans since the ODU game, he took the trouble to call a freaking press conference last year to lecture everyone on why Fuente was still, in his mind, the right man for a job he was clearly overwhelmed by.

I honestly hope that the conspiracy theorists are right, and that Whit was forced by higher powers to read that statement. Because if that was what he truly believed, I have no faith that he will be able to look at the results of his next hire with an objective lens.
