That line of reasoning actually supports an expanded playoff model
It basically borrows from what we see in all other sports that have playoffs tied to winning conferences, divisions, etc. along with wild cards.
Teams get hot late in a season and play their way in. And sometimes those teams stay hot and win titles. That's what is fun about it. And that is the basis of the entire claim that "early season losses are less important". But you can't have that approach without an expanded playoff. It doesn't work when there are just 4 teams and selection is based on a committee (rather than being based on winning a conference).
This just highlights how college football is broken and needs to catch up with all other sports.
