Next Head Coach Hire Won't be Easy
I am a big Whit Babcock fan, and hope he can find a solid replacement. (Despite Fuente not working out, I honestly can’t second guess the hire. It seemed like a great get at the time.) Now, however, Tech football is many years removed from being a National contender. Whoever comes in will need a few years to rebuild the recruiting pipeline, which is difficult when the team isn’t winning. That fact, plus the buyout for Fuente and potential buyout of the incoming guy’s contract will make Whit’s job difficult.
I think the options for Tech will come from two possible groups:
Head coaches at second/third tier schools who have done a solid job recruiting and winning despite having the decks stacked against them, and are now looking to move up a category. A few names include Hugh Freeze (Liberty), Chadwell (Coastal Carolina), Jason Candle (Toledo), Clawson (Wake Forest – Tech has been a better/bigger program over its history than Wake, if not recently). Other schools will be looking at all of these coaches too.
Or coordinators at bigger schools looking for their first head coaching opportunity. And realistically, Tech will not be in the running for the top people on that list.
With the competition from other schools, most of the best candidates will have multiple offers. Getting the right guy won’t be easy.
Any thoughts on someone we realistically could compete for who might be able to rebuild the program?
