Not really an automation issue if you ask me. Even I would have treated

malfunction as a runaway trim issue and selected the STAB trim off. The 2nd incident they turned it off, multiple times. With the speed increasing, no one ever pulled the power back, which made the pitch even harder to control. Stab off and pull power back to slow down, they probably would be around to talk about it.
