Even if the goal is to stay average, we can get a cheaper coach.


Hire some mid-major coach who isn’t the rising star, or promote JHam, or whatever. Go cheap and we can recoup Fuente’s buyout in a couple years and might even get lucky with better results.

This is essentially what Indiana did. Fired Kevin Wilson for alleged issues, and promoted Tom Allen who had never been a HC and didn’t even have much coordinator experience. Their recruiting is better than it’s ever been, and they’ve had good results (I mean, for them - tough to win in the B10 East).

I’m more in favor of showing the fans we want to return to prominence and making a move to try to get the best coach we can right off the bat, but at this point I’d take either strategy.
