Stats watch: VT's offense could hardly be any worse

Now that we've played 5 games, another look at where we rank nationally:

We're currently #116 (out of 130 teams) in total offense, averaging a paltry 328 yards per game. We're also terrible in yards per play, ranking #111 at 4.9 YPP. Yikes.

We also struggle to both run the ball (#88 nationally in rushing offense) and pass the ball (currently #104). We have no real identity on offense, and pretty much do everything poorly.

We're currently #93 nationally in scoring offense at 25 PPG. Guess who's #1 in that category? Pitt, currently averaging over 52 ppg. Uh oh.

The defense is better: currently #44 in total defense, #35 in passing defense. Jermaine Waller is tied for the lead nationally in INTs, with 4 picks already this season. We're also #29 in turnover margin, not bad at all.

The other cause for hope is that we currently rank #1 in the nation in fewest penalty yards: we've only racked up 161 yards worth of penalties this year. That's good enough for #4 nationally in penalty yards per game.

Will be very interesting to see how this game vs Pitt plays out, given our clear deficiencies on offense and relative strengths on defense.
