At least we're not getting boat raced this year
Lost in all of the angst over firing Fuente is the fact that we actually have a competitive team this season. Last year we demolished from the jump against UNC, Pitt, and Clemson. We struggled mightily against Duke, Wake, Liberty. We pissed away the game against Miami. It feels like we're losing this year strictly due to coaching, not just being worse on the field.
That hasn't been the case this year, we controlled UNC and MTSU. Richmond was rough, WVU jumped out but we pulled them back, and ND played out almost exactly as everyone predicted by coming down to the last possession.
Next weekend is the most important game of the season by far, if we win we're in the driver's seat for the Coastal and if we lose we no longer control our own destiny. Look at our schedule:
Pitt - really good
Syracuse - Sucks
Duke - Sucks worse
GT - Lost to Duke
BC - Toss up
Miami - Average?
UVA - Average?
One thing that we know is we have the best defense in the Coastal, even after this weekend we still haven't given up more than 400yds this year which is something we did 7 times last year. If Hamilton can figure out how to get pressure on the QB, our CBs have the ability to seriously slow down some of these high powered offenses. With a 5% improvement in coaching we could be looking at a decent conference run.
Playcalling this weekend wasn't horrible, some decisions were questionable but on the whole we drew up plays that worked against a really stout ND defense with a top 5 pick at safety.
