Two of those guys did pan out- just not at VT.
JVZ and TT both ended up transferring and starting at Big Ten schools. I'd call a starting position in a high major conference "panning out". Johnny Hamilton, another VT 7 footer who never "panned out", just signed with a NBA team.
The common denominator with all of those guys, IMHO, was not their lack of ability- it was a head coach who seemed obsessed with "positionless basketball" and constructing a team comprised entirely of players between 6'2" and 6'7". I, for one, am glad that Mike Young seems to have a more balanced roster building approach. He also seems more willing to be patient with big guys, who usually take longer to develop than smaller guys who grew up always having the ball in their hands.
