I think what Tombo is trying to say is something like this ...

He doesn't want to see us have an overall weak season at face value that -- JUST BECAUSE THE COASTAL SUCKS AND WE WIN IT -- extends Fuente's tour here. Say we go 5-3 with a bunch of 4-4 teams and one 3-5 team.

We get blown out by Notre Dame, come home and squeak by Pitt and Syracuse to get to 3-0 in conference. We get beat by a couple TDs on the road against GT and BC, then squeak by Dook. We're 4-2, then lose big to Miami while beating UVA to finish the season and get the Coastal nod at 5-3 in conference. Three other teams all lose on that final day who would have won the tiebreaker against us.

At this point we're 7-5 overall and didn't beat a good team past UNC (and even they are questionably good). We win the Coastal, sure, but ... did we really? Or did everyone else lose it?

But the bigger question is -- have we improved?? Has Fuente advanced the team? Tombo seems to be saying two things: First, in such a situation we would NOT have improved as a program, but at the same time he thinks winning the Coastal would give the administration cover to not fire Fuente when it's still necessary, Coastal title or not.

Try to look at his posts this evening like this: If we go 7-5 with ugly losses and continued performances like we saw today, do you think Fuente would need to go? But if we somehow stumble into a Coastal crown in the midst of such a season, does that factor into the decision-making? Why or why not?

He seems to cynically think a Coastal crown in a sucky season would provide cover; it's not an unreasonable thought process. It's tough to extrapolate that to "you want us to fail so much you're rooting against us winning the division," though. He just thinks IF we win, it'll be an ugly win that does more harm longerm than good.

And I think we all know we have history at VT of short-term success doing more harm than good to long-term success by providing a crutch to lean on.
